Living in New York, near the southern tip of Cayuga Lake (Finger Lakes), I stumbled upon Don and Sons' Smoking Loon Pinot Noir a few years back. I have never turned away. The 06 was molto buono. I wish there were more of a Don and Sons selection in this area.

With an 08 Pinot open as this is typed, I must hold up a glass in appreciation of the Smoking Loon line. It is an excellent wine, at an excellent price. From Don's speech as heard here, August's goal was achieved in producing this wine. Salute...l'amo!!

I enjoyed reading your blog and I think it's great to show pictures of the cork industry. It's amazing how many people don't know anything about cork. I would like to comment on your statement, "The big question seems to be: which corks are greener? It’s somewhat of a toss up actually".It actually it isn't a toss up, just because a piece of plastic can be recycled, doesn't mean it is. Less than 1% of all plastic closures in America get recycled. The other 99% end up in landfills or in our oceans. The production of one plastic closure releases 24 times more green house gasses and takes 10 times more energy to produce. Plastic is not sustainably sourced, biodegradable and has been shown to leach endocrine disruptor's into wines. Plastic never goes away, no matter how small it becomes, it continues to affect our planet forever. The harvesting of cork is one of the most environmental and sustainable forestry practices. Nothing beats nature....

Congrats to your granddad and mine! Should you ever be Ventura way, look up Wine Predator and I will show you his wine cellar--which people thought was a bomb shelter when he built it!

BTW, I put up a blog post about your Big Box Zin and will tweet about it for Global #Zinfandel Day. Cheers!
